U.S. Tax Deadlines to be Aware Of

Individuals and businesses who are residents of the U.S. or receive certain types of income from U.S. sources have certain U.S. tax filing and payment requirements. The following are some of the key upcoming Federal tax deadlines for the 2024 filing year:

April 15, 2025

  • U.S. corporate tax returns (Form 1120/1120-F) for corporations with a December 31 year-end [an extension to file to October 15, 2025 can be requested by this date].
  • Payment of tax liability for corporations with a December 31 year-end.
  • U.S. individual tax returns (Form 1040) for individuals residing in the U.S. [an extension to file to October 15, 2025 can be requested by this date].
  • Payment of U.S. Federal tax liability for all individuals.

June 16, 2025

  • U.S. individual tax returns (Form 1040) for individuals residing outside the U.S. [an extension to file to October 15, 2025 can be requested by this date].
  • U.S. individual tax returns (Form 1040-NR) for nonresident alien individuals that did not receive U.S. wages [an extension to file to October 15, 2025 can be requested by this date].

September 15, 2025

  • U.S. partnership tax returns (Form 1065) [extended due date].

October 15, 2025

  • U.S. corporate tax returns (Form 1120/1120-F) for corporations with a December 31 year end [extended due date].
  • U.S. individual tax returns (Form 1040) for individuals residing outside the U.S. [extended due date].
  • U.S. individual tax returns (Form 1040) for individuals residing in the U.S. [first extended due date – a further extension to file to December 15, 2025 can be requested by this date].
  • U.S. individual tax returns (Form 1040-NR) for nonresident alien individuals that did not receive U.S. wages [extended due date].

December 15, 2025

  • U.S. individual tax returns (Form 1040) for individuals residing in the U.S. [final due date].

State Filings and Payment

State deadlines generally align with the Federal deadlines with certain exceptions.

Penalties

Even if no tax is due, a late-filing penalty can be assessed if a tax return contains certain forms (e.g., Form 5471, 5472 and 8938) and the forms are filed late.

Separate penalties may be assessed for late-filing and late-payment. Therefore, it is recommended to file and make payments by the due date to avoid penalties.
