The Senior Associate supports and leads aspects of audit and accounting engagements by preparing financial information, maintaining accurate working papers, and performing assurance procedures under the guidance of Managers and Senior Managers. This role is responsible for managing client files from set-up through completion, applying relevant accounting standards, and ensuring documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with firm methodologies. The position requires strong technical aptitude, analytical skills, attention to detail, discretion in handling confidential information, and the ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced public accounting environment while mentoring junior team members.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Conduct research to gain a thorough understanding of the client’s industry, identifying key performance drivers, business trends, and emerging technical and industry developments.
- Devise appropriate engagement programs, including risk analysis and determination of materiality.
- Prepare corporate tax returns, personal tax returns, T5013 Partnership Returns, T3 Trust Returns, T4/T4A/NR4/T5 Information Slips, T5001 Tax Shelter Slips, GST and EHT Returns, ETD calculations, and WSIB calculations.
- Prepare client files, financial statements, and draft tax returns; prepare general representation letters; distinguish between compilation and assurance files; and prepare various tax schedules within CaseWare.
- Ensure engagements are completed on time and within budget.
- Maintain continuous communication with the engagement partner and manager regarding engagement progress, including risks, issues, alternative solutions, and variances from plan in terms of time and budget.
- Keep abreast of accounting trends, standards, and relevant legislation.
- Manage multiple concurrent assignments efficiently.
- Work closely with the administrative assistant team to support client onboarding, proper processing and filing of documentation, and workflow oversight.
- Accurately enter daily timesheets and expenses in CCH, attend scheduled meetings, and maintain consistent communication with colleagues regarding engagement status.
- Coach and guide Associates and Staff Accountants to support their professional development.
- Meet established billable target hours.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Education background in accounting and/or a related field, with 3–5 years of relevant work experience.
- Currently pursuing or actively working toward Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
- Strong technical skills in accounting, auditing, asset depreciation, tax, and bookkeeping.
- Experience preparing T1, T2, T3, and other tax forms is mandatory.
- Solid technical background in Canadian Income Tax.
- Experience with CaseWare and CCH (Tax Prep) considered an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to take initiative and multi-task in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
